You reach for a large pan while making breakfast, but it is at the back of the cupboard. Two other vessels have to come out before you can lift it free. It is a small frustration, and a useful place to start planning a new kitchen: make the things you use every day easier to reach.

Then you visit a showroom. A soft-closing drawer feels convenient, a basket looks useful, and a cabinet-door finish catches your eye. Soon you have several prices for the same 8 × 10 ft room, and it is hard to see what each extra rupee buys.

For the cabinet measurements in this guide, the illustrative subtotals are ₹83,400, ₹1,31,400 and ₹2,36,000. Each covers 12 ft of base cabinets, 8 ft of wall cabinets, cabinet doors, specified hardware, a countertop, sink, tap and fitting. Appliances, tiles and new plumbing or electrical lines are separate. The prices are assumptions for this worked example, not verified market rates for a particular brand or city.

Let's work through the middle option first, from cabinet measurements to the complete bill. Once you can see what each part costs, it becomes much easier to decide which upgrades matter to you.

Measure cabinets separately from the floor

An 8 × 10 ft kitchen has 8 × 10 = 80 sq ft of floor area. To price the cabinets, you also need to know how much usable wall length they will occupy. The door, windows, sink and appliances all affect where cabinets can go. Even another room of the same size can need a different plan if its window is larger or its door opens a different way.

For this example, we will use these measurements and storage fittings:

Measured part Example quantity
Room floor 80 sq ft
Base cabinet run 12 ft
Wall cabinet run 8 ft
Countertop 24 sq ft
Upgraded internals 3 drawer systems, 1 basket, 1 cutlery tray

The 24 sq ft countertop area is equivalent to a rectangle measuring 12 × 2 = 24 sq ft. If the counter turns a corner, check how the overlapping area is measured so you do not pay for it twice. Tall units, loft storage and an island are excluded from this example; add them to both the drawing and the bill if you want them.

Separate measured sketches of an 8 by 10 ft kitchen floor, 12 ft base run, 8 ft wall run and 12 by 2 ft equivalent countertop.
Floor area, cabinet running feet and countertop area are separate measurements. The 12 × 2 ft rectangle illustrates the 24 sq ft countertop equivalent, not a cabinet installation plan.

Check what is behind the cabinet doors

With the measurements settled, look beyond the finish you liked in the showroom. The cabinet body, often called the carcass, holds the shelves and your stored utensils. The doors, also called shutters, and drawer fronts are separate parts, finished with laminate or another chosen surface material. Two kitchens can look similar from the outside while using different materials and fittings inside.

Ask the supplier to specify the material, grade and thickness of the cabinet bodies and shelves, along with the door construction, finish and edge treatment. For the sink cabinet, also check how pipe openings and edges will be protected from moisture.

In the middle option, the ₹82,000 basic cabinetry total breaks down into ₹36,000 for cabinet bodies and shelves + ₹30,000 for doors and finish + ₹16,000 for ordinary hinges, handles and hardware. Keep that total in mind as we look at running-foot rates: it is the same cabinet cost expressed another way.

Compare running-foot rates on equal dimensions

Using the assumed rates for the middle option, base cabinets cost 12 ft × ₹4,500 = ₹54,000, and wall cabinets cost 8 ft × ₹3,500 = ₹28,000. Together, they come to the same ₹82,000 shown above; do not add the two breakdowns together. These rates cover the specified cabinet bodies, doors, finish, shelves, ordinary hinges and handles. Upgraded storage fittings, the countertop and installation are priced separately.

A running foot measures length, but the quote still needs to state the cabinets' height and depth. Another supplier may quote per square foot of door area instead. Before comparing their rates, ask both suppliers to mark exactly what they are measuring on the same drawing.

Price useful hardware without counting it twice

Once the basic cabinets are priced, you can choose the fittings that make them easier to use. In the middle option, three upgraded drawer systems cost ₹9,000, one basket costs ₹4,000 and one cutlery tray costs ₹2,000, for a total of ₹15,000. The drawer fronts are already covered by the cost of the doors and finish; this allowance pays for the specified upgraded mechanisms and accessories.

If an upgrade replaces hardware already included in the cabinet price, ask the supplier to deduct the cost of that original hardware. The quote should name the exact drawer and hinge systems and say which ones are soft-close.

This is a good moment to think about that pan at the back of the cupboard. A drawer or basket earns its place if it makes everyday storage easier to use. Compare each upgrade with the basic fitting it replaces, and choose the accessories that suit how you cook.

Put the middle option's full bill together

The cabinets and storage fittings are now accounted for. To complete this example, add the countertop, sink, tap, delivery and cabinet installation. The countertop price below includes the stone, agreed edge finishing, sink and hob openings, and the stated cutting and fitting work. That work is already covered, so it should not appear again under cabinet installation.

Purchase or work Example basis Amount
Base cabinets 12 ft × ₹4,500 ₹54,000
Wall cabinets 8 ft × ₹3,500 ₹28,000
Upgraded drawer, basket and tray hardware Listed allowance ₹15,000
Countertop with stated cutting and fitting 24 sq ft × ₹600 ₹14,400
Sink and tap Purchase allowance ₹10,000
Cabinet delivery and installation Allowance ₹10,000
Subtotal — ₹1,31,400

A separate 10% reserve of ₹13,140 brings the planning amount to ₹1,44,540. This reserve is a budgeting assumption for the example. The chimney, hob, fridge, dishwasher, tiles, new plumbing or electrical lines and applicable taxes are still outside this amount.

Also confirm in writing who will make the final water, electrical and gas connections. IKEA India's installation description, for example, excludes electrical and gas connections from its appliance installation service. Check your own supplier's terms to see exactly what is included.

Compare three options using the same measurements

With the middle bill clear, you can see how different selections change the total. All three examples below keep the same 12 ft base-cabinet run, 8 ft wall-cabinet run and 24 sq ft countertop. The rates and allowances change with the assumed selections.

Cost line Lower-cost example Middle example Higher-cost example
Base cabinets, 12 ft ₹3,000 × 12 = ₹36,000 ₹4,500 × 12 = ₹54,000 ₹7,500 × 12 = ₹90,000
Wall cabinets, 8 ft ₹2,400 × 8 = ₹19,200 ₹3,500 × 8 = ₹28,000 ₹6,000 × 8 = ₹48,000
Selected extra hardware ₹7,000 ₹15,000 ₹30,000
Countertop, 24 sq ft ₹300 × 24 = ₹7,200 ₹600 × 24 = ₹14,400 ₹1,500 × 24 = ₹36,000
Sink and tap ₹6,000 ₹10,000 ₹18,000
Delivery and installation ₹8,000 ₹10,000 ₹14,000
Subtotal ₹83,400 ₹1,31,400 ₹2,36,000

The table shows how cabinet materials, finishes, storage mechanisms and countertop choices affect the bill. A higher total alone does not guarantee better quality, and these examples do not rank brands. Ask for a complete material and fitting specification for the option you choose, so you know what the price includes.

Add renovation work before ordering

These figures assume the space is ready for the new kitchen. If you are replacing an old one, allow separately for removing cabinets and counters, disposing of debris, repairing tiles and preparing for new plumbing or electrical work. The kitchen renovation guide explains that wider scope. If pipe routes or electrical points will change, review the plumbing and wiring costs too, and check that the same connection work has not been charged twice.

Before production begins, have the supplier verify the final site measurements. Keep the drawing, list of hardware, countertop details and written installation scope with the quote. Then use one everyday task as a final check: where will that pan go, how easily can you take it out, and does the bill include the fitting you chose for it?

Questions that often come up

What does an 8 × 10 ft modular kitchen cost?

The illustrative subtotals here are ₹83,400, ₹1,31,400 and ₹2,36,000 for the same measured cabinet lengths and countertop area. Your room's size alone cannot tell you how many cabinets will fit or what they will cost; you need the cabinet plan and specifications as well.

What is the cabinet rate per running foot?

The rate depends on the material, cabinet height and depth, and included storage fittings. The middle example assumes ₹4,500/ft for base cabinets and ₹3,500/ft for wall cabinets. The countertop and installation are separate.

Is drawer hardware included?

Check the supplier's specification. This example prices three upgraded drawer mechanisms, a basket and a cutlery tray separately. If an upgrade replaces hardware already included in the cabinet price, ask for that original cost to be deducted.

Are both the countertop and chimney included?

The countertop is itemised separately and included in each subtotal. Chimney and hob purchases are excluded. Confirm the scope of countertop cut-outs and final appliance connections with the supplier too.

How can a small kitchen's cost be reduced?

Plan cabinet lengths around the storage you need, consider simpler doors and finishes, and choose fittings you will use regularly. Keep the material and fitting specifications in the quote, so you can see exactly what changes when the price comes down.
