How the quantities are calculated

Follow the method, check the example and review the assumptions.

The method

From measurements to materials

Net wall volume ÷ effective brick volume including joints gives the theoretical brick count. Wastage is added before rounding up.

An example

Put the numbers in context

A 4 m × 3 m wall, 200 mm thick, with 2 m² of openings has 2 m³ net volume. A 200 × 100 × 100 mm effective module gives 1,000 bricks before wastage.

This illustrates the method; your inputs determine your result.

Assumptions to check

  • Each wall keeps its own dimensions and openings.
  • For linked surface work, opening faces use the thickness of their own wall.
  • The entered joint thickness applies in each unit direction.

Limits of this calculation

  • Bond pattern, cut bricks, piers and site breakage may require a project-specific allowance.

Common questions

Are doors and windows deducted?

Yes. Add each opening to its actual wall. It is deducted once from that wall only.

Does the calculator include mortar?

Joint thickness affects the brick count, but cement and sand are calculated separately in the brickwork mortar module.
